Kentucky Derby Week is well and truly underway at Churchill Downs, and we’re looking forward to seeing what Saturday brings.
Which contender will join the likes of American Pharaoh, Animal Kingdom, Justify and California Chrome by adding the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the US Triple Crown, to their CV?
The field is made up of 20 horses, with a guaranteed place being given to 1 EU horse and 1 Japanese horse, with the rest of the field being made up of US contenders. To secure a spot in the Derby, a horse must accumulate points during the 'Road to the Kentucky Derby' races. A league table is formed, and the top 20 will head to the Derby.
This year, the field will consist of 19 US horses (3 of which are trained by Bob Baffert) and one Japanese contender, Master Fencer. There will be no horse representing the EU this year, as the connections of the top four horses in the EU points table (Bye Bye Hong Kong, Antilles, Jahbath and Playa Del Puente) declined their invitations.
